Why We Chose Kinloch Lodge as the Home for Our Scottish Retreats

Words by Laura Bunting, Founder of Wildlife & Yoga

There are places that call to you before you arrive.
Places that seem to hum with something quieter, deeper.
Kinloch Lodge is one of those places.

Tucked into the far northern edges of Scotland, in a wild and windswept corner of Sutherland, Kinloch feels like the end of the road.

And the beginning of something else entirely.

This is why we chose it as the home of our Scottish Highlands retreats.

A Lodge That Breathes With the Land

Set within thousands of acres of private wilderness, Kinloch Lodge sits quietly on the edge of a vast landscape shaped by wind, water and time. It’s not a hotel, and it’s certainly not a spa. It’s a place that holds space for restoration, for reconnection, for the kind of deep exhale that only nature can offer.

Once a traditional stalking lodge, Kinloch has been transformed with intention and care. It still carries the raw honesty of its Highland roots: stone walls, wood fires, handwoven textures, but now with soft beds, nourishing food and views that stop you mid-sentence.

When you arrive, you feel it.
The slowing.
The spaciousness.
The sense of being cradled by something ancient.

Exclusive, Immersive, Wild

We hire the lodge in its entirety, which means our guests have the space all to themselves. No strangers passing through. No schedule to follow but our own.

That privacy allows us to build something rare: a true retreat.

Yoga sessions held in the stillness of morning, overlooking the hills.
Long walks through quiet woodland, where red deer emerge and disappear like whispers.
Evenings curled beside the fire, cheeks warm, hearts full.

Here, nature isn’t an added extra. It’s the fabric of the experience.

Kinloch Is Part of Something Bigger

The lodge is part of Wildland, one of the largest and most ambitious conservation projects in the Highlands. Every stay here contributes to the restoration of native ecosystems, the rewilding of forests and peatlands, and the protection of endangered species.

It means our time at Kinloch supports something beyond ourselves. And that matters. Because part of our work at Wildlife & Yoga is remembering that wellness isn't just individual, it's collective.

What nourishes us should also nourish the land.

Simplicity, Done Beautifully

Inside the lodge, there’s a quiet luxury to everything.
Not flashy. Not excessive. Just thoughtful, tactile, grounded.

Each room is different, but all are designed to feel like a balm. Textured linens, warm light, a window onto the wild. There’s space to rest, to read, to reflect. No pressure to be “on.” Just gentle encouragement to be here.

We eat together, slow meals made from local ingredients. The kind of food that comforts without fuss. And between it all, there’s time. Time to wander, to be still, to breathe in the kind of air that seems to clear more than just lungs.

A Retreat for the Soul

There’s something transformative about Kinloch.
Maybe it’s the solitude.
Maybe it’s the way the hills cradle you like an old story.
Maybe it’s just that we don’t get many chances to truly stop.

Whatever it is, we return to it.
And we invite you to do the same.
